Upcoming Workshops:

Light as Color - Level 2.

Instructor: Jean-Pierre Roy

Picking up where Level 1 left off, Level 2 deals with color as an emergent property of the interactions between an Object’s surface and of the Light Source that falls across it.

How do surface properties affect the color and value of a light source mapped across an object? What is the Illuminator and what is the Illuminated? Does light come from please other than the light source? Is there a difference between the brightest the object gets vs brightest moment on an object? What does this do to our notions of color, temperature and form? This workshop will have students tackle the vocabulary around the optical phenomena governing reflectivity, shininess, matte-ness and all the ranges in-between. Students will learn to conceptually separate the ideas of “local color” and “the reflection of the environment on the object itself” in order to create a new hierarchy. This is a fundamental step in bringing the students understanding of color and light to the next level and beyond.

This 3 day workshop will consist of a 3 hour lecture and demo on Friday night, followed by 12 hours of working from the model over Saturday and Sunday with breaks for lunch. (6 hours each day)

Easels and drawing boards will be provided. Student must bring their own brushes, surfaces and paints. Materials list to be provided.

Light as Color 1 not required to take take Level 2.

Dates: Friday May 17th 6:30pm-9:30pm, Saturday and Sunday May 18th-19th,10am to 5:30pm.

Price: $1000.00

3 hour study of Heidi, oil on paper, 2023.

Light as Color - Level 1.

Instructor: Jean-Pierre Roy

The class is focused on leaning objective metrics to better understand the way color relationships dictate how we subjectively experience color.

Designed for the painter with some experience with the materials, the workshop introduces the artist to working theories of temperature, luminance and the basic grammar of form linking color and light. Taking place over 3 days, the workshop will have students learn the core principals of how we see and learn to translate those principals into painted forms. A 3 hour working lecture on Friday night will precede two full days of working from the model on Saturday and Sunday with demos from the instructor. Both individual working critiques and a final group critique will be performed. A guest lecturer will join for a Saturday night talk about composition and design.

Easels and drawing boards will be provided. Student must bring their own brushes, surfaces and paints. Materials list to be provided.

Dates: Friday to Sunday, December 1-3rd, 2023

Price: $1000.00

3 hour study of Clayton, oil on paper, 2023.
